Get a different perspective on the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales on a gorge walking or ghyll scrambling session led by an expert local guide
Located in the remote feeling Mallerstang Valley between Hawes and Kirkby Stephen is the amazing Hell Gill! Here, the stream has cut its way down through the Yoredale Main Limestone to leave a splendid canyon over 500m long, up to 15-20m (45-60ft) deep and never more than a few metres wide. A traverse along its length is a brilliant and adventurous half-day outing - a bit like caving but but without a roof! A stunning clean-washed 'scalloped' streamway, cascades, impressive rock sculptures and plunge pools await the explorer after a short and scenic walk-in from the parking location.
Why not make a day of it and combine a traverse of Hell Gill with a wonderful guided walk up the nearby Wild Boar Fell - a striking hill with great views across to the Three Peaks and the Howgills.
We also run exciting excursions to a number of normally dry ghylls (gorges) in the Yorkshire Dales. Starting at the base of the ghyll, we follow it to the top, negotiating all the fun and challenging scrambles along the way. Some are better suited for abseiling, so great fun can be had climbing up one and descending down the other!!
Please get in touch with us for our rates and more details on our Hell Gill or dry ghyll scrambling sessions! As with our caving trips, visiting Hell Gill is very much weather dependant and in the event of poor weather meaning we cannot visit Hell Gill, we would aim to go caving instead at one of our suitable venues, or ghyll scrambling in one of the dry ghylls.
